In support of gay pride, Kraft Foods Oreo brand posted The Rainbow Oreo to their Facebook page. It was tagged with the caption “Proudly Support Love!” Thanks Oreo, and Thanks Kraft! As you might imagine, the not-for-sale rainbow cookie created a swell of support for gay rights. As you might also imagine it managed to outrage some cookie-eating homophobes. Darn.
Over 200,000 Facebook users had “liked” the page and the post was inundated with thousands of pro and anti-rainbow cookie sentiments.
Kraft spokesman Basil T. Maglaris said that the rainbow cookie is not planned for sale, but meant as part of the snack’s 100th birthday celebration, “creating online content every day reflecting current events in a fun way using images of OREO cookies and milk.”
“In recognition of Pride Month, OREO created an ad depicting the Rainbow flag with different colors of OREO crème, we are excited to illustrate what is making history today in a fun and playful way. You can follow OREO on Facebook to see the newest image each day.”
“As a company, Kraft Foods has a proud history of celebrating diversity and inclusiveness. We feel the OREO ad is a fun reflection of our values.”
Let me be first to say thanks Oreo. I don’t get particularly political but it’s hard to imagine a boycott because a company is being progressive and inclusive. Though there were far more positive than negative responses, some of the more narrow-minded and vitriolic posts were compiled by buzzfeed among others. Think we’ve moved forward as a race? Check out some of the negative posts below and prepare to be amazed that this is the world we live in.
So that happened….
I’m munching on a bag of Double Stuff right now, thank you. Bring on the fat I’m running double time tomorrow. If you’d like something to cleanse your palette a bit here’s a few companies that score 100% “pro-gay” rating by Human Rights Campaign.
