This dress is made entirely of wine. There’s no getting the stains out. The wine is fermented to create microfibers of cellulose. Those fibers are then dried. When that’s done, the material has the consistency of cotton. Pretty cool.
The project was developed by a group of scientists at the University of Western Australia, and is officially titled Microb’be’. Unofficially they’re calling “boozy couture” and “fermented fashion.” We like. There is however, somewhat of a drawback to wearing these alcohol creations, aside from looking like your skin may have been debrided in a horrific motorcycle crash. It continues to produce vinegar, which I imagine might be a sour experience on a fancy night out. Either way, it’s a neat use for alcohol and a novel use for alternate materials. And you can always slice a bit off for your salad dressing…
