Paul Quinn College Bans Pork From Cafeteria

It’s not easy eating well in college.  Late night study sessions.  Binge drinking.  Ramen.  Paul Quinn College, in Texas of all places, is trying to help out their students by banning pork from the school cafeteria, arguing that eating pork can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems, and obesity.

College president, Michael Sorrel, told The Dallas Observer that his students are especially susceptible to these sorts of health problems (Paul Quinn College is historically a black college.)

‘The reality is that our student population comes from demographic that struggles with the type of health concerns that you see in underresourced community.’

Creating a pork-free cafeteria is the latest move to ‘improve the lives and health of our students’, according to a statement from the college.

‘We know there are many negative health consequences of consuming pork (eating pork can lead to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cancer, sodium retention and heart problems, not to mention weight gain and obesity)….

 

From this semester forward PQC will no longer serve dishes containing pork. That applause you hear in the background is the blood pressure of our students, faculty and staff.’

Pork, such as chops, bacon, and pork belly, are high in saturated fat and cholesterol.  Ham and lunch meat also carry their fair share of fat and calories, as well as nitrates and nitrites as preservative agents, both of which have been linked to cancer.

However, leaner cuts of pork, such as tenderloin, are less calorie dense than chicken and contain similar quantities of fat.

On Monday, July 23rd, the USDA released its monthly Greening Headquarters Update to employees (an internal document.)  In between updates on office sustainability initiatives, the newsletter encouraged readers to give Meatless Monday a try by sampling some of the options available in USDA cafeterias.  That didn’t last particularly long.

The newsletter referred to United Nations data that cites animal agriculture as a major source of greenhouse gases and climate change.  USDA spokeswoman Cortney Rowe now says the department does not endorse the “Meatless Monday” initiative, which is part of a global public health campaign.

The agency removed the posting hours after the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association denounced it in a news release. The USDA often promotes the beef industry by encouraging Americans to eat meat.

Starbucks has announced it will no longer use cochineal extract in its Strawberries & Creme Frappuccino drinks and five other products, instead opting for a tomato-based ingredient called lycopene.  Cochineal extract is made from dried and crushed beetles.  GAH!  It’s in more stuff than you think.  If you’re a modern lady and you’re wearing some lipstick today, chances are you’ve got crushed beetles on your lips.  I personally love the Birthday Cake Pops at Starbucks – on the off chance that I go in.  Do they have crushed beetles?  Survey says?  Yes! Here’s your infographic of the day.  A look at vegans by the numbers, so to speak.  Packed with info, this piece strikes a great balance between education and entertainment.  Based upon a Facebook survey with text provided by the Vegetarian Resource Group, this piece by Advanced Physical Medicine is pretty neat.  I don’t subscribe to the lifestyle personally but I like the ethos.  It’ll be a shame that the very next post after this is going to be an epic meat sandwich that contains two steaks.  Oh dear.

Asparagus SoupI almost always buy asparagus when I’m in a supermarket.  We eat a ton of it.  It’s hugely healthy and we think it’s mighty tasty.  It’s heart healthy and hugely full of folic acid.  You might ask – who gives two *@$#’s for folic acid.  Well, folic acid is plays an important role in heart health and in preventing Alzheimer’s – according to some research.  Patients who die of Alzheimer’s Disease have little or no folic acid in their system.  Reason enough to stock up then.
